THE CHALLENGE

Simon Pearce is a high-end retail brand that sells glass, pottery, and wood tableware. Each piece is handcrafted by professionals in their Vermont Workshop called “The Mill”. They pride themselves in creating extraordinary pieces that are designed with timeless simplicity and can be used for everyday moments. They were very a design-centric client to work with who presented us with a utmost-interesting challenge to solve. How do you convey all of the heritage, Artisanship, quality, and handmade authenticity into an online eCommerce experience?

THE FINAL SOLUTION

It’s simple. We told their story. Because Simon Pearce has such a rich history and the products are made in a fashion that is practically extinct today, we used radical transparency to successfully showcase this content to users. We drastically decluttered the global navigation and created an new pillar called “Discover Us” which allows users to learn and explore. We created more than just another pricey tableware eCommerce site. We introduced pieces of their unique story where relevant, justifying the product’s higher prices with their real value, elegance and craftsmanship. We also redesigned their entire email campaign and provided art direction on photoshoots to reflect this same vision of users buying something designed to last generations.

Prior to us beginning the redesign, they were focused almost purely on selling their product by showing it on beautiful table settings. We educated them on the importance in how the products are made…the sweat, grit, and generations of experience that goes into making something so perfect and refined by hand. We worked on product photography styles and video creation to help bring the story to life visually.

Videos, old photography, and actual product sketches were integrated through the site to reinforce the personality, history and art the brand stands for in a very personal, engaging way.

Our team started with extensive competitive landscape research. We were able to clearly define our brand differentiators and align on the vision of bringing those front and center of the eCommerce experience. We then helped the client develop their project roadmap to highlight short-term wins and long-term project goals.

In the roadmap, the project was divided into sprints based on projected order of impact to conversion and overall UX improvement. We started with homepage and global navigation and presented many variations of the how the story could be woven into each, both by layout and content. We also worked closely with the client to make sure products were being put into the right categories within the proposed simplified global navigation. We created tremendous value by creating clear user paths.

Storytelling on this grander level was something new to them and instantly became foundational moving forward.

Gift registries accounted for 48% percent of Simon Pearce’s online sales. The section was redesigned to became a hub of easily searchable and creatable registries that were both inspirational and full of guidance.

Everything designed and created for the shopping flow was made extremely clean and simple, to let the products shine while being supported by tiny pieces of it’s life and story.

Product photography was reshot to feature all of the texture and detail of each piece. The cart and checkout process was simplified using best practices and within their current Magento platform abilities.

The checkout process was completely redesigned by customizing within their Magento capabilities. We worked closely with their internal and overseas development team to make sure all unique use cases were accounted and designed for.

An email Welcome campaign was conceptualized, strategized, and designed in a module templated format. We also created a fully customizable module system to be used for future emails of all variations. The internal team was able to build emails that were consistent and unique using their current platform.
